Where to Start with Home Organization

An organizing plan in 3 simple steps, Organized By Rediet

Your home organizing plan should be centered around the things you are trying to accomplish and the time frame in which you are trying to accomplish those things.

Identify Areas You Are Trying to Organize and Your Vision for them

There is typically a motivating factor behind every organizing journey. Perhaps there is a room in your home that is very disorganized and makes you want to switch things up. Or maybe there is a room in your home where it’s impossible to be productive and you want to change that. Whatever your motivations are for organizing, make sure you use them to make your plan.

Start with the room or area that made you want to start organizing and think about what your ultimate goal is for that place. Perhaps you want to keep everything in the room but just find a better way to organize it. Or maybe you want to declutter the room and drastically decrease the amount of items. Make sure to have fun with the planning and look for inspiration to build your ultimate vision for each space. This is the perfect time to look on Pinterest and other online boards.

Establish a Reasonable Timeframe

Once you’ve thought about the rooms and spaces you want to organize and what you ultimately want them to look like, you’re ready to get real about how much time you need to accomplish your goals. If you don’t plan your timeline properly, you will only achieve a subpar version of the goals you originally set out.

It’s easy to get super ambitious once you have a vision and clear goals for organizing your space, but you might frustrate yourself in the process. You might mistakenly sign yourself up for an egregious amount of work in an effort to get everything done quickly. Most organizing tasks take at least 1 – 3 hours per room, so it is important to give yourself enough time if you’re taking on a massive organization project.

If your organization plan involves buying additional items to aid with organizing or discarding of items to help with clutter, really challenge yourself to think about a timeline that will keep you motivated and focused without overwhelming you.

Document Your Plan

Now that you have your plan set, it’s time to document it! Writing down your plan is a tried and tested way of making sure you stick with it.

One great way to document your home organizing plan is on a calendar. You can use the goals and timeline you establish to assign different rooms or spaces to particular days. If you want to break the work up into smaller efforts, you can list tasks rather than rooms or spaces on the calendar. The great thing about using a calendar is you can find several templates to fill out to help you complete your plan!
