A list of items most charities don't want
Giving to charity is an awesome way to preserve the use of items might not need anymore. However, you need to be mindful of what you can actually give.
There is a common misconception that charities accept any type of donation if they accept non-monetary items. Before you ask your movers or organizer’s to take items to charity for you, make sure you’ve put aside items that will actually be accepted.
Save yourself the hassle and either sell these items or have them collected or dropped off at junk-removal sites:
What Most Charities Won’t Accept
- Appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, etc)
- Mattresses (any used mattress is a no-no)
- Cribs
- Disassembled Items (don’t bring anything that has missing parts)
- Carpets
- Car Seats
- Upholstery without Fire Safety Labels
- Cleaning Items
- Personal Care Items
If you are ever in doubt about what you can and can’t give to charity, you can always call the charity and ask. You can work with a home organizer to identify viable items for charity ahead of your move. This will save you, your movers, and your organizers time. Additionally, it will help you get in contact with junk removers early and make your moving day that much more efficient.
