Whether you are moving to a new home or office, these five golden rules for packing will make your move as swift and easy as possible.
Start Early
Regardless of how many times you have moved, packing takes time. We have all been caught in the trap of underestimating how much time it will take to pack our home. It always creates a frenzy and unnecessary stress. Make sure to give yourself plenty of lead time to organize your move. Besides packing, you also need to consider other logistics like coordinating with movers, figuring out what day and time you will move, and more. We recommend starting to pack slowly at least one month before your move if possible. Start with items you rarely use and slowly work your way to the items you use frequently. .
Assume You Have More Items that Meet the Eye
We have all had those moments where we think we are done with packing, then we remember that hidden drawer or closet we rarely open. When you start packing, always assume you have more items than meet the eye. Start opening closets, drawers, and compartments that you don’t typically open so you don’t leave them until the last minute.
Get Rid of What You Don’t Use
As you pack, it’s easy to just move things from where they are into a box. However, packing for a move is a perfect time to declutter and get rid of things you don’t use. Aside from sentimental items, our motto is: if you haven’t used it or thought about using it in the last year, then it’s something you can get rid of. There are so many options for getting rid of unwanted and unused items, from selling to donating and even junk removal. Be bold and let go of some things to make your move smoother and make room for some new items!
Label Your Boxes
People usually think about labeling boxes as something that helps you unpack faster. However it can be incredibly useful for your packing process as well. When everything is laid out and ready to pack, it’s easy to lose track of what has already been packed. You may start looking for items that are already in a box because you are unsure where they are. Labeling or color coding boxes does also help with unpacking–you can easily plan which room you want to unpack first and quickly find items you need for immediate use.
Get Help
Even if you’re moving down the hall, it can make all the difference to get help with packing. We often only think about hiring professional packers to help on the day we are moving, but they can be helpful well before. Hiring an organizer and/or packers to help you pack a few days before your move is a genius idea we have seen over the years; it makes the process much easier.
